Read The Bible – My Favorite Bible Translations

My Favorite Bible Translations

Reading the Bible is the most wonderful thing we can do! It has certainly changed my life and millions of other Christians around the world. Still many struggles with their Bible reading; they find it hard to understand and their Bible reading time is more of a pain than a blessing! It doesn’t need to be that way!

The reasons can, of course, be many, but I think one of them is that many have a hard time with the typical biblical expressions and also the old and not so easy language. If you are not that familiar with the Christian and biblical vocabulary, many things can be hard to get!

I think this is very easy to help because of several Bible Translations that are using a very easy to understand language. It is more modern without taking away the true meaning of the Bible verses!

The Bibles mentioned below are all versions that I personally use on a regular basis and I really want to recommend you to use them. Especially if you struggle with the old ones. (King James Version for example)

This version I have used since I was young. It is a great and very easy to understand translation. I have recommended those bibles to many people, and they often come back to me praising the bible! If you really want some help to get into the meaning of the bible verses you should use the New Living Translation Study Bible. In that version, you also have comments and explanations that open the word of God up in a wonderful way! People I know use the study version as their daily devotion.

Free from depression

Bible Teaching -The word of God

David Got Free From Guilt

We have been using David as an example of someone fighting discouragement and maybe also that what we call depression today. The word depression does not exist in the Bible, but there are many examples of people fighting fear, anxiety and great discouragement. David is one of them.

In the well known Psalm 32 David is fighting guilt, another feeling that are paining many people and that are causing Christian depression today. People feel stress, condemnation, fear and other things.

David describes His very feelings during the time he was convicted of his sin. It is a strong description I think many of us know from our own lives. He felt Gods hand heavy upon him, believing that God was judging him. He felt like he had no power left and he was really suffering under the mental pain called guilt. For many Christians depression can be caused by that same feeling of guilt.

Read the psalm:

A Psalm of David, Maschil. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah. I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
(Psa 32:1-11 KJV)

The only thing that helped David in this hard situation was to confess his sin and not hide his mistake. When he did that he immediately knew God forgave him for everything and he became free from depression and guilt!

David lived under the old covenant and still he reaped the benefit of being forgiven by God. How much more we that now live in the New Covenant. According to the New Testament Jesus has taken all our mistakes and sins on himself, and if you and I believe in Him we are made free from sin! Any kind of what we might call Christian depression has it’s solution here; in the fact that Jesus took all our sins, all our sicknesses and all kinds of pain on himself in order for us to be free!

There is no longer any condemnation in Christ Jesus. That means that if you have sinned – that sin is taken care of by Jesus! Nothing has the right to accuse you any longer. The devil is going to try to condemn you and put you under the same pressure as David, but you are free! Even David got free from his guilt – you also must take a step out in freedom. Do not stay under the yoke of guilt! The key is to believe the word that you are free from sin!

Feeling guilty is a big cause of Christian depression. It can be that you feel guilt and condemnation for something you have actually done, but many also feel condemned for things they haven’t done! They carry a burden of not being good enough, never feeling that God is pleased with them etc. This feeling of guilt can be subtle, covered by religious unspoken rules.

But as a Christian you are free! Jesus took all your sins. No matter how”big” your sin seems to be, you have to receive your forgiveness and go on!

David rejoiced in the Lord when he understood that he was forgiven! He declared that the Lord protected him instead of punishing him.

Meditate On The Word

The Bible talks a lot about reading and thinking of the word of God. For example when Joshua got his great assignment; he should bring the people of Israel out of bondage, God told him to think about Gods word. He should meditate on it and never forget about it.

God told Joshua that meditating on the word was his way to victory in every situation. Meditate on the word Joshua, God said, and you will be prosperous. With the word in his heart there would be no room for worry and anxiety.

Can the word of God really help me to be free from depression?

For some reason many of us have forgotten about this way of getting the word of God into our hearts. It should not be that way. God is very clear about through the whole Bible. Meditating on the word of God is powerful and helps us live in victory. That means that it also works for us when we need to be free from depression.

This is what God was telling Joshua:

There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
(Jos. 1:5-9 KJV)

God is making his point

God is here really stressing the point that Joshua should be strong and of good courage. Why is it that God told him that so many times? Of course, God knew that this man Joshua would face a lot of problem trying to help the people of Israel. He was to pick up the mantel after Moses and that was not an easy task.

I am sure God could see how Joshua many times would wonder if he should be able to make it. What if he should fail? What if it did not work? There was going to be many times when Joshua would want to give up this whole project. God knew it, and he told Joshua over and over again: Be strong and of a good courage! God really wanted him to understand that he was not alone!

Those are thoughts we can recognize when struggling with negative and depressive thinking.

Worry and anxiety can be helped by meditation on the word.

But God also told Joshua how to be strong. He said: Meditate on the word of God! God said: Do not let the word leave you. Think about it day and night, never let it go! In other words: Take the word of God very seriously, make it your priority.

That is still the medicine that will make us strong and courageous! When we live in the word- the word will set us free. Not only will it lead us to be free from depression and anxiety, but it will help everything else that comes against us.

There is nothing that can overrule the word of God. Nothing that is stronger than the word. When we take it to our hearts and live out of it, there are going to be result. Not immediate, but as time goes by change in our lives will be made!

I Can Not Concentrate

Question about Christian Depression

Hi, I am a Christian, and I am right now fighting depression. I have been to a therapist that told me I am depressed. I know that as a Christian we are supposed to have this joy and peace in our faith, but I can not feel that at all.

I am honestly trying to read the Bible bad it is really hard to concentrate. Same with prayer, I can feel no joy praying. What am I going to do to be free from depression and this problem trying to pray and read the Bible? I would need some Christian help for depression.

Hi, sister!
Let me first say that I honestly feel for you. It is hard to know that there is a freedom, but feel like you can’t reach it.

Difficulty with concentration is a symptom that can arise from psychological or emotional problems. Sometimes it is also associated with memory symptoms such as forgetfulness etc.

That means for you trying to concentrate on reading the Bible can be a challenge, and I don’t think that you shall try some heavy Bible study in the first place! Don’t get me wrong here; I am the first one to tell people to read the Bible because I know that the freedom is in the word of God and in the relationship with Jesus. Absolutely.

But, you can read the Bible in many ways. And I think that if you have problem concentrating, bibles studies might be too overwhelming. There are other ways of study the Bible that I think will help you better right know.

I think the best way for you is to “eat” the word of God. What do I mean by eating the word? Well, I mean to feed your self with hand picked bible verses that are targeted for your problem. We might compare with for example vitamins. If you lack the vitamin C you need to get something to eat that contains that vitamin, right? You have to eat orange or some other fruit that are C-vitamin rich. You do not pick food without that vitamin.

Now, the word of God is all nutrition for our inner man. We need to eat of it in order to live a healthy spiritual life. But, when you are having trouble in one specific area, feed your self with word for that. For example; if you need healing, concentrate your bible reading to bible verses about healing. Choose verses that speak to your heart. The Holy Spirit is your helper and will lead you to verses that mean something to you; verses that are relevant for your specific situation.

Now, let us go back to your question about depression. There are some things that I think is important for you.

First of all; drop the pressure that might pain you, that as a Christian depression should not be a problem for you. It is a problem for many Christians as well as physical sickness are. You are not a bad Christian because you are fighting depression. You are loved unconditionally by Jesus, and He does not value you from the problem you face. He loves you because He is love! And: Christian depression can be healed!

Second: Take some encouraging bible verses and write them down on a paper. Choose verses that fit your situation and that are a promise from God to you. For example: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (Joh 14:27 KJV)

Read the verse (and others you find helpful) and think about it. Thank Jesus for giving you peace. Speak it out loud; make these verses your own. Remember this is Jesus telling you that He has already given peace to you. You have to receive that as a gift of peace, and believe it. Then Jesus is saying; Let not….your heart be troubled. You see – you and I have a part to play. We can say stop to thoughts that are troubling our heart. Having the word of God living inside of us helps us do that! It is power in the word. That’s why we feed on it. Let the word of God beat your Christian depression!

And when it is hard to pray; do not try to perform a “good” Christian prayer! Just talk to Jesus as your friend that wants to help you. Trust Him – He is your best counselor!

Will those simple steps make someone free from depression? No, maybe not, but it can be a starting point. There are a lot more to it, but the word of God is very powerful. Jesus said: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
(Joh 8:32 KJV) I am absolutely convinced that the word of God can set you free from depression, but every change has to start somewhere.

God bless you and never forget – Jesus is always there to help you.

There are many other things to say of course. They are explained in our e-course: CHANGED BY THE WORD

Trust In The Word Of God

Trust in the word of God – healing for Christian depression.

In the old times, in my country, the Christians were called”the Readers”. The believers were known everywhere by that name. It came of course from the fact they read the bible and they wanted to follow and live the word of God through their everyday life.

In those times, the Bible was honored as the word of God that could change someone’s life. People put their trust in the Lord. You can, of course, find those people today also, but sorry to say, many Christians today doesn’t believe that the word of God has this life-changing power. They read the Bible like an old nice book and receive it just like some good value, some good life rules to follow, but often question if it is the real word of God.

For the Christians that decide to believe that the word of God is powerful will find that anything in their life can change. Absolutely anything. The word of God has an answer and a solution for everything we meet. The love of God can transform anyone and change any situation. But only the one that believe in it will see it happen. If someone is a Christian depression and anxiety and other mental problems can be healed. Everyone can experience emotional health while receiving the word of God in their lives.

What we need is a humble attitude towards God and His word. Some people take pride in questioning everything, and of course, there is a way for everyone to ask questions and seek before the can believe, all of us has done that. But ones you believe in God and believe that Jesus is your Savior, it is time to believe that what He says is true. Otherwise why believe at all? If you believe that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life”, (John 14:6) then you can also trust every word He says and all that is written about Him in the word of God.

There is your beginning to see miracles and wonders. There is your beginning being set free from your Christian depression.
