What Does The Bible Say About Depression?

It is a good question to ask: What does the bible say about depression? The bible has answer to everything and of course even that question. The word of God does not use this word though. The word depression. But when you read through the Bible you can see people struggle with negative thoughts because of there circumstances the same way that we today define depression.

We can read in Old Testament how Job found His situation so hard that he cursed the day he was born and we can read how David were fighting fear and discouragement and how He expressed it through many of the Psalms. We can also read about for example a mighty man like Elijah. He had seen the greatest miracle come to pass; God came with fire on the Mount Carmel and all people turn their hearts to the Lord and said: The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God!

But short after that the same Elijah fled for his life and wished his own death sitting under a juniper tree!

The Bible really knows about people and the struggles they can go through.

But the Bible also gives us the way out of course. When Elijah sat under the bush feeling sorry for him self God appeared and said: What are you doing here Elijah? With other words; why do you fear, why do you not trust me? Rise up and go do what I tell you!

Does that mean that God does not care about us when we are depressed? Of course not. God served Elijah in the most loving way by giving him food and comfort. But it means that He knows that there is a way out, and that it is really possible to walk that way!

In the book of Hebrews it says:

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. (Heb 12:2-3 KJV)

When we ask the question: What does the bible says about depression, the answer is always in the first place to look at Jesus and the atonement. Jesus died for you and me to be free and there is always freedom in Jesus! He told us never to give up but look at Jesus who manages through every hardship without giving up. He is our example, and he is also our strength and deliverer! Looking unto Him will help us not to: “be wearied and faint in your minds”. His word has the power to renew our mind and set us free from bad feelings and every kind of bondages.

A Woman Caught in Adultery – John 8

A Woman Caught in Adultery

Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.

“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”

They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.

When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

“No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

Free From Depression By The Word

Walking around under that heavy burden of depression and anxiety is paining many people. Even as a Christian depression can attack me and for some reason amongst Christians there is a lot of doubt that God can be any help for depressed.

The thing is that in order to experience the freedom we need to find out how God is working in this area. If we take a picture: What if you go to the doctor and you say you have problem with your knees. He examines you and tells you that the only way to heal this is to go through surgery. But you refuse… you instead tell the doctor to write a prescription and give you some pills! The doctor keep telling you that pills won’t work but you want it any way! The thing is you can eat how many pills you like….it will not help you! What will help you is the surgery!

It is about the same thing with us sometimes. We want it our way. We want someone to come and lay hands on my head and immediately you find yourself free from depression. (And as I have said before I know it sometimes happen like that, praise God!) But when the Bible is talking about a healthy mind it is talking about renewing our mind according to the word of God.

That is what has helped me and thousands of other Christians. There is a Bible verse that describes this quit well:

He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
(Psalm 107:20 KJV)

The word is what God did send to the people to heal them from their destruction. The word is also what God has given to us to make us free!

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

(Joh 8:31-32 KJV)

The Word Of God Is Creative

When God works in our life, He does it in some way or another through His word. That is true for physical healing and of course also when it comes to emotional health, including being free from depression. His word is a powerful but sorry to say, very neglected source for Christian living.

What do I mean by that? Do not all Christians believe in the Bible? Well, the answer could be yes and no. There are many believers that use to pick and choose some verses they think they can believe in and there overall attitude towards the Bible is quit skeptical. If you keep that attitude you will most unlikely experience the power that is in the word of God!

Because the word is powerful! In the same way that God in the beginning of the world created everything; the light, the sea, the birds, the grass and of course man, by only the word of His mouth, He today creates things through his word! He said: let there be light and it become light! It is awesome! The power of God is amazing! He said: Let there be fish in the sea…and the sea was filled with the most incredible swimming creatures!

God’s power is the same today. When He speaks; let there be light into our lives that are filled with darkness, it will be light! The dark burden of depression will lift off of our shoulders!

Maybe you ask: How can he speak His word into my life? I need to get the light and be free from depression. The short answer is: He has already spoken over your life! If you have invited Jesus into your life as your Lord, He lives inside of you and He is light! When you got saved you got free! To be saved means to be set free from slavery. What we need to do is to learn to believe in the word of God. Believe that He has already taken our sorrows and grief on Calvary. You can not neglect the word and then in the same time believe that you will be set free.

That is why it is so important to be serious about the word of God if we want to be free from depression or any other burden in our lives!
